What is Death Certificate?
A death certificate is a legal document issued by the government to the nearest relative of the deceased, stating the date, fact, and cause of death. The death has to be reported within 21 days and has to be registered at the registrar concerned under The Registration of Births and Deaths Act of 1966. Any delay in registration can be condoned with a payment of nominal late fees or upon prior permission of the registrar along with an affidavit from a notary public.
How does it work?
- Reporting and registration of death The death has to be reported and registered by the head of the family of the deceased or by a medical-in-charge if death occurs in a hospital or by the jail-in-charge if it occurs in jail.
- Filling out the form To avail death certificate, a prescribed form has to be filled and certain documents have to be submitted to the registrar.
- Verification After proper verification by the registrar, a death certificate is then issued. Delay in reporting the death to a registrar can be condoned by paying late fee charges.
